1 Samuel 26.1-25, 1 Corinthians 5.1-13 - Lectionary for 8/11/10

(So sorry, forgot to post this earlier today)
Today's readings are 1 Samuel 26.1-25 and 1 Corinthians 5.1-13.

Our reading in 1 Samuel 26 is a little surreal.  David is calling Saul the Lord's anointed.  Saul is calling David the Lord's anointed.  They both promise not to harm one another. They both recognize that the other is the rightful king. Some interpersonal conflicts are simply too complicated to untangle, right?

Ultimately there is only one king in Israel, that is the Lord God. Actually, ultimately we see there is only one king over all creation. It seems to me that both Saul and David were confessing something quite wise and right. Neither of them proclaimed himself to be in charge. Each one proclaimed someone else to be ultimately responsible for the welfare of the nation.

How many times do we as Christians try to take matters into our own hands? How often do we assert the supremacy of our pet doctrine, our pet strategy, our pet musical style, our pet anything? No, let God be God. Let us acknowledge him as he is. There is only one God. We are not him.

Lord, rule in our hearts and lives according to the riches of your mercy and grace.
