Joshua 10.1-25, Acts 11.19-30 – Lectionary for 7/4/210

Today's readings are Joshua 10.1-25 and Acts 11.19-30.

See all the jockeying for position in today's reading from Joshua 10! This seems to be part and parcel of our fallen nature. We see a situation and try to cover our tracks. We see danger on the horizon and try to make a pre-emptive agreement. We enter into power-broker mode to try to get ourselves out of trouble.

As we see today, there is no deliverance from the displeasure of God except a life characterized by faith in him. At the end of the day, at the end of our reading, the difference between those who were alive and those who were dead was simply whether they believed God or not. It's as simple as that.

This is a good day to remember that distinction. This is a good day to confess that we frequently live like unbelievers. This is a good day to look at our priorities. This is a good day to repent of our frequent sin. This is a good day to rejoice. Jesus Christ has paid the penalty for the sin of the world. He has resolved the wrath of the Father whether we believe it or not. Are we going to leave it there, or are we going to decide to be our own power-brokers and act in unbelief?

Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief!
