Joshua 24.1-31, Acts 13.1-12 – Lectionary for 7/6/10

Today's readings are Joshua 24.1-31 and Acts 13.1-12.

Sometimes a history lesson is exactly what we need. The people of Israel heard their history, the history of God's deliverance of his people. They pledged their loyalty to the Lord. Yet Joshua reminded them that they were not acceptable before God. They said they wanted to serve the Lord, but they were not willing to destroy their idols. They said they had always served the Lord but they were clinging to idols, false gods.

How often we are like the Israelites. We cling to our own abilities. We depend on our wisdom. We think we are faithful and loyal while we spend our time fearing, loving, and trusting false gods. We look at our world through carnal eyes while God looks through spiritual eyes. We say we hope in Jesus but in reality we hope in ourselves, our employers, our government.

What are we to do? Joshua calls the people of Israel. Decide! Today! Right now! Decide whom you will serve. You know what your Lord has done n the past. You know what he has said about himself. If you're going to trust the Lord, really trust him. If you're going to believe that your sins are forgiven through Jesus Christ, believe it. If you're going to say that the Word of God is effective, depend on it.

May the Lord grant us repentance and forgiveness by his mighty hand, just as we confess we need forgiveness and that it comes from him.
