Judges 3.7-31, Acts 13.42-52 – Lectionary for 7/8/10

Today's readings are Judges 3.7-31 and Acts 13.42-52.

People very often have an intense interest in current events. What's in the news? And we follow those news events closely, enthusiastically, at least for a little while. The talk of the town might be the World Cup or an oil spill or an earthquake, or a piece of legislation in a distant state. How long do those things last? How long will our interest continue? Probably not terribly long.

Watch what happens to the Israelites in Judges. In today's reading alone there are three different judges raised up. Now there's some debate about whether the captivities of Israel were universal or not and whether the judges cared for the whole nation or for some parts of the nation. Regardless, look at this cycle. People follow God, led by their judge and deliverer, wholeheartedly, for a little while. And like we follow one news story then drop it and forget about it, the people of Israel forgot about following their Lord.

May the Lord give us a fellowship with other Christians, a constant reminder of the work of Christ on our behalf, an abiding care for the things of the Lord! May he use us to exhort and encourage others, and use others the same way for us!
