Judges 6.1-24, Acts 14.19-15.5 – Lectionary for 7/10/10

Today's readings are Judges 6.1-24 and Acts 14.19-15.5.

Once in a while we just have to admit that someone is right. Our Lord comes to Gideon, who is hiding and secretly trying to secure his harvest against the enemies. Gideon considers himself to be weak and lowly, a man who is not mighty and who has little faith. Maybe we should admit that he is right there. Notice he doesn't believe that God has a job for him, then doesn't think he can do what the Lord has appointed, then he feels this need to get God to prove his deity before Gideon will get up and do anything? Yes, Gideon is quite right. He is weak and lowly, a man who is not mighty and who has little faith.

Lest we become proud of ourselves, how much faith do we have in the word the Lord has given us? When our Lord says we are forgiven by his grace, do we believe him? Do we really believe that Jesus' death is not sufficient for our sins only but for the sins of the whole world? Do we really believe he is actually with us? Do we believe that he regenerates people by the means he has given us, regardless of our own understanding or wisdom? Do we really know that the Lord is the one who supplies us with all we need? Do we really believe that his mercy is everlasting? Do we have any concept of how redeemed we are in Christ? No, in all this, we, like Gideon, are people of little faith.

Let us take encouragement from what our Lord does in Gideon. He appoints a task for Gideon and sees that Gideon will be able to accomplish that task. Likewise, the vocation he has put before each one of us is something he will enable us to do. What has the Lord put before us today? May we trust the very same Lord to do it in and through us.
