2 Kings 4.8-22, 32-37, Ephesians 5.15-33 - Lectionary for 9/6/10

Today's readings are 2 Kings 4.8-22, 32-37, and Ephesians 5.15-33.

We read today about God's grace to a foreign family. Elisha has received help and comfort from a Shunamite couple. They are getting on in years and are childless. Elisha proclaims that the woman will conceive and have a child, the one thing they wished for.  When tragedy strikes the household and they child dies unexpectedly, Elisha prays and brings healing.

How has the Lord tenderly cared for us? How many times has he brought the gift of life into our households? How many times has he protected us when disaster may have struck us but did not? We can't even begin to calculate how many bad things have not happened to us or how many times we have recovered from a time of trouble.  Our Lord is the God who cares for his people. He brings them what they need and sustains them through all their trials.

Let us look to our Lord and Savior, Jesus, who has promised never to leave us or forsake us, who promises that he is present forever. Let us look to the Lord who has taken our sorrows and healed our illnesses, and who himself is the resurrection and the life.
